発売日から少し遅れること3月17日日曜日、ついに手元にGR IIIが届きました。ノートを再開するにはこの上ない良いきっかけです。
とは言っても、既にネットに多く存在するGR IIIのスペックレビューを書く理由を特に見出せないため、主観的なファーストインプレッションについて書くことにしました。また、今後慣れなどによって印象が変わることも十分あると思いますが、あくまでもGRを1,360日間(3年間強)毎日触れてきた私がGR IIIを初めて使った日に感じたことの纏めとなります。

GR IIIのテストコースに選んだのは私のストリートスナップの原点である渋谷。撮影時間は人が多く行き交う13時から15時半までの2時間半。GR IIIは電源を切る度にその日に撮った枚数がモニターに表示されますが、それによると130枚ほど撮りました。その撮影時間を経ての結論が「撮影時はGRとそれほど変わらない、ただしその前後の作業はまったく違うカメラのように慣れが必要である」です。具体的には次の通りです：

撮影中のインプレッション：前記の通り、前の日までGRを使っていた身からすると良くも悪くも「手応え」の変化はあまり感じられませんでした。それは「GR」の形・デザインに目立つ変更がない事からくる手への馴染みやすさもそうですが、機能面の変化もあまり体感できなかったからです。カタログスペックの仕様上はストリートスナップには欠かせない機動性とフォーカス速度の向上は確かにあります。でもそれは家でじっとGR IIIの動きを観察できる環境で確認できることであって、実際にストリートで撮影をしているとそれを確認する暇がありません。言い方を変えると、今まで「GR」というスナップ機に求めていたスピード感が元から求めていた期待に追いついたため、GR IIIを使うことはごく自然に、そして違和感なく撮影プロセスに馴染んだことになります。

撮影前後のインプレッション：全く違うカメラのように感じました。もちろん画面に見慣れたメニューやアイコンは並びますが、「絵作り」の観点から考えると撮影前の準備やその後の仕上げ(GR内RAW現像)は大幅に追加されたパラメーターによって大きく作業が異なります。具体的には、例えばGRでは比較的シンプルに「コントラスト・シャープネス・周辺減光」の3パラメーターを設定するだけのハイコン白黒が、GR IIIではさらに「キー・コントラス明/暗各部・調色・フィルター効果・明瞭度」が加わりました。よって、写真を撮る前のスタンバイに必要な時間、そして撮影後の仕上げに必要な時間が大幅に変わります。今後の効率性を考えると、多用するフィルターはあらかじめ好みの設定にしておき、撮影後に2～3パラメーターのみ微調整するワークフローを作り上げたいです。

その他に感じたことをいくつかリストアップします：

3.0型のモニターで、風景や街並みなど広々とした構図の写真を確認するのは非常に気持ちが良い。渋谷の高層ビルを煽って撮った直後にモニターを見るのが楽しくなります。
クロスプロセス、やっぱり搭載して欲しかった。フィルターをカスタマイズしてどうにか再現できないか、要検証。
電源OFF状態から再生ボタンを押すと再生モードに入る機能について、押す時間が体感的に3倍長い…ファームウェアアップデートによる改善に期待。
カメラ内RAW現像のプレビュー反映速度が遅い。とてつもなく遅い。同じくファームウェアアップデートによる改善に期待。
フルチャージのバッテリーが2時間半の撮影時間を終えた時には1/3までにダウン。やはり最低でも2個常備が必須。
GR IIIのハイコン白黒はGRのとは別物。パラーメータの仕上げの問題かもしれないが、そう割り切ることに。
ついに多重露光撮影をRAWで保存できるようになりました！夢が一つ叶いました。

とりあえず以上です。
GR IIIは間違いなく今後のメイン機になるので、また期間を開けてインプレッションの変化等を書くことにします。最後に渋谷で撮影した作例を載せておきます。

March 17th Sunday, I could finally get my so waited GR III. I though that it is the best timing to come back to my abandoned blog. Not to write any spec review as there are already lots of people who have written such content, but to write my honest and fresh impression after using this camera for the first time. So what you are about to read is an extremely subjective review of how I felt in my first day with the GR III after using the GR (I) around 1360 consecutive days (since June 2015).

I chose my old playground, the streets of Shibuya to do the GR III testing. Time, 2.5 hours during crowded early noon between 13:00 - 15:30. The GR III shows you how many pictures you have taken in the day when you turn it off, and according to that I shot around 130 (RAW+JPEG). After finishing that session, my conclusion is “no big changes while shooting, but the before and after process is like a completely new camera”. Let’s analyze more in detail:

When shooting: as written , I’ve been using the GR till the day before, and I couldn’t feel any clear difference while shooting with the GR III. This is not only because the ergonomic design is almost the same (despite the size down), but I didn’t experience any functional big change. According to the catalogue specs and reviews by other users, it is true that the GR III is faster in several aspects (e.g. switch on readiness, auto-focus, etc.), but you can see those differences if you are at home, relaxed and looking carefully, not in the middle of your photography session specially when running though the streets catching moment by moment. In other words, we (street photographers) have always expected a high level of response to the GR, and the GR III has finally achieved (or very closely) it. Hence, it is not strange to feel “normal/natural” the so mentioned spec improvements.

Before and after shooting: here now things are very different. Of course you will see familiar menu options and icons on the screen, but from the “picture processing” point of view, the how you interact with the camera to develop your works changed notably. Taking as example my favorite Hi-Contrast B&W filter: in GR, things are pretty simple and you only need to think of three parameters [contrast - sharpness - vignette] to get the desired output. In GR III [high/low key adjustment - contrast (highlight) - contrast (shadow) - toning - filter effect - clarity] have been added to entertain you while pre-setting or processing RAW in the camera. the GR III requires you more time to prepare and to finalize each work. In pursuit of efficiency, I would prefer to invest some time in defining my default preference setting to the mostly used filters, and create a workflow that allows me to complete each development by only adjusting two or three parameters.

Other findings are as listed below:

The 3.0 inches monitor is great for wide pictures e.g. land/cityscapes. The experience has improved really a lot, and so I enjoyed taking from low angle the towers of Shibuya.
I miss Cross Process filter…I still can’t understand why it was removed…I can try to imitate it by customizing the default filters.
Play mode quick access function (pressing the play button when the camera is turned off) is now much slower. Hope it gets improved with firmware update in close future.
The preview speed when developing RAW is ridiculously slow. Very, but very slow. Strongly hope to get it improved with firmware update.
Fully charged battery ended with 1/3 after 2.5 hours of shooting. Must to carry at least two.
Hi-Contrast B&W is not the same between GR (GR II incl.) and GR III. Perhaps I only need to work harder with the parameters setting, but I think I should consider them as two different filters and that’s all.
Finally! Multiple exposure can be saved in RAW! One of my dreams came true.

So this was my impression of my first day with the GR III. No doubt that the GR III has become my main equipment and real/deeper findings are to come from now on. I will be back to share them. Till then, please enjoy the gallery from my test shooting in Shibuya.
